Zinc (Zn) is an important trace mineral which has various roles in poultry nutrition. It serves as an essential nutrient and a metal cofactor for several enzymes. Sufficient zinc intake and absorption are required for various functions such as immunity against pathogens, growth, and quality of the egg. It is now recognised that Zn has a major role in antioxidation, growth and development, production, immunity and stress related issues. Supplementation of Zn can improve growth, augment immunity, enhance antioxidant capacity, increase endocrine secretion and interact with other minerals in the gut. While zinc’s importance as an essential nutrient has been recognized for many years, only recently have researchers understood the full impact of this nutrient on animal and human health. Researchers have identified over 200 zinc-dependent enzymes in all the major biochemical pathways in the body.
