Description

One of the greatest challenges to the sustainability of modern society is an inadequate supply of clean water. Due to its energy saving and cost-effective features, membrane technology has emerged as an alternative to the conventional water purification. This includes seawater and brackish water desalination as well as municipal or industrial wastewater treatment. Membrane fouling, however, is one of the major issues encounter in membrane filtration which significantly impedes the efficient application of membrane technology. Fouling has contributed to short membrane lifespan, higher operating cost, and decrease of membrane overall performance drastically. Integration of nanotechnology in mixed-matrix membrane formation is a strategy to deal with pervasive fouling problems from a variety of foulants. This book discusses the synergistic effects of nanotechnology, namely graphene oxide (GO) nanoplates and silver (Ag) oxide nanoparticles in Ag-GO mixed-matrix membrane. Uniform dispersion of nanomaterials in membrane matrix gives high mechanical strength, high permeate flux along with the ability on fouling mitigation. In short, Ag-GO mixed-matrix membrane is a safeguard to membrane fouling in ensuring the vast application of membrane technology in water industry.
