Description

Oxidative stress is the potential of oxygen free radicals and other reactive oxygen species deleterious effects on tissue and various cellular molecules such as lipids, DNA and protein, in biological systems has become a wide area of interest for environmental toxicology studies. In the past two decade, various studies were progressed on the effects of oxidative stress caused by environmental pollutants in terrestrial and marine organisms. Increased numbers of agricultural and industrial chemicals, transition metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organophosphate pesticides enters into the aquatic environment were bioagumented into aquatic organisms. This article reviews current knowledge and advanced quantification procedures for ROS and their Redox process in various organisms. This knowledge is extended to a specific role in aquatic environments and important perspective in the field of cyanobacteria for their sensitivity to oxidative pollutants and their potential for environmental toxicology studies.
