Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a major vegetable crop grown throughout the world including tropical, sub-tropical and temperate regions. On global basis, it is planted on 4.4 million ha with a total production of 151.7 million metric tonnes (FAOSTAT 2011). India is the third largest tomato producer in the world after China and USA, accounting for about 8 per cent of the world tomato production. It is cultivated over an area of about 0.876 million ha with the total production of 17.82 million tonnes and productivity of 20.35 tonnes/ ha (Anonymous 2012a). In Punjab, tomato is grown on an area of 6.14 thousand ha with the production of 151.8 thousand tonnes (Anonymous 2011). In terms of area, it occupies third largest place after potato and onion at the national level; and fourth place after potato, garden pea and chilli in Punjab state (Anonymous 2012b).
