Animal welfare (AW) is strongly linked with sustainable development (SD) and human well-being. Despite this crucial interdependence, animal welfare is largely neglected in the sustainable development agenda. Not only is animal welfare an environmental, ecological and social justice concern but it is also highly critical for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). This book systematically evaluates the significance of incorporating animal welfare into the sustainable development agenda by analyzing the interconnections between animal welfare and sustainable development goals (SDGs). It concludes that animal welfare is interlinked with the success of SDGs and therefore, needs to be integrated into the SD agenda. The formation of a separate SDG for animal welfare can help place animal welfare concerns at the center of policymaking and academic scholarships. Furthermore, there is a need to expand the definition of SD, reconcile justice frames, enhance the role of non-state actors (NSAs) in animal governance, and introduce a globally binding universal declaration for animal rights.
