Descripción
English complementizers play an important role in clausal construction. It is widely considered that the complementizers such as for, if, that, and whether can be used to introduce embedded clauses. How can we identify their syntactic roles that exert impact on variant patterns? Why does our understanding of such complementizers help us improve the quality of translation into Spanish? The present research provides a crosslinguistic analysis of English complementizers and their corresponding Spanish counterparts. The study adopts a qualitative approach along with an extensive review of specific theories developed in previous empirical studies. The exploration of syntactic structures regarding the order of sentential components provides an insight into the English and Spanish complementizer constructions. Firstly, teachers need to gain profound knowledge of syntax in order to foster an effective development of language learning and teaching. Secondly, it is necessary for translators to comprehend linguistic structures so as to parse sentences and produce accurate output with respect to sentential interpretation and translation. Thus, the comprehension of certain constructions in which such complementizers are involved is supposed to improve the quality of English and Spanish translation, as well as to enhance machine translation.
