The Practice of Clinical Pharmacy in South-African Hospitals

Clinical Pharmacy services in South Africa increased in recent years. Although clinical pharmacy went through a fast-developing phase, activities still exist in small specific areas. Clinical pharmacy services are implemented in many hospitals, both in private and public health care facilities. However, no standards of practice exist and therefore clinical functions differs greatly between different hospitals and institutions. This work aims to describe the demographic profile of the clinical pharmacist practicing in South-Africa, as well as current working environment, and the difference in practice between institutions, focusing on specific activities that forms part of the practice of clinical pharmacy. An in-depth look into quality assurance practices are also provided. The research was done using a mixed methodology, resulting in both qualitative and quantitative data. Conclusions from current research shows that clinical pharmacy in South Africa are healthy, although still in the early stages of development. A need has been identified to set standards and implement quality assurance measures, to ensure quality providers of clinical pharmacy services in South Africa.
