Recently, a computed tomography (CT) technique covering all or parts of the spine has been proposed to diagnose osteoporosis. Some groups have also suggested a complementary method for evaluating BMD by CT using attenuation in Hounsfield units (HU) in the trabecular, non-cortical region of the spine. One study confirmed a positive correlation between CT HU values and DXA BMD and showed the advantage of CT measurements, including avoiding areas with obvious degeneration and selecting cancellous bones that are more affected by osteoporosis.
